Avril Lavigne

Let me be the first to say a big fuck you to Avril Lavigne for boiling down a small part of Japanese culture and commodifying it for American audiences. Oh wait...

  1. She poured sake over ice...

She has to be making a statement about American youth emulating that small part of American culture. I can't imagine even Avril Lavigne being that vapid.

    1. So you're saying that it's kinda like Madonna's "Material Girl" video, that was completely misunderstood by basically everyone?

  2. While the song is awful and the video is terrible, I don't see why some people are getting their panties in a knot over it. The only insulting about this is that, along the process of writing a song, producing that song, and then making a video for it, no one spoke out and said "but this song really sucks."

  4. The Japanese probably love this song. Meanwhile Americans take offense like it's their culture being boiled down. Wow.

    1. Agreed. In fact, I heard she actually wrote this song for her Japanese audience. I think it's really dumb to act as if the Japanese are not exploiting this kawaii stereotype as well. hey, it gets them tourism and makes them lots of money from stupid consumerist teenager girls and the occasional middle aged otaku.

  5. This is a dumb video, Avril trying to be all Japanesey and cutsie and all, but it's so pretentious, and the models are not exactly young and cute, and all I keep thinking of is "butch dike" for some reason (maybe it's the shaved head and the song's lyrics about pretty kitties rolling around in underwear or something, I dunno). And what's with the 100% studio produced track, fake guitar (yet she plays one in the video as if there's even a real guitar in the recording, not). And oh my god, the bad attempt at Dubstep?? So superficial. Oh, and her rapping? Gawd. Trash this fail attempt at being all Harajuku Girl like, Avril

  6. Can I point out that Japanese have commented about this they don't see this as racist as Americans do. But we always have to have something to complain about. Also I would like to say that person that directed and produced this was Japanese. I am not going to say I like the song. It is horrible. I am just saying that perhaps someone should actually ask someone from the country in question if they see if as racists before getting all butt hurt over something that doesn't really matter. If you want to get upset about something that matters there is ton of stuff in the news you could get upset over.

  8. The costumes lean towards almost being good, but the music is, well, what happens when a foreign person over-sensationalizes Jpop.
