It's an awesome movie, I've seen it three times. Most Japanese people don't like it however, so don't pre-judge it based on a Japanese review if you're a westerner.
Matsumoto actually did a screening of the movie to Americans "secretly" studying their reactions trying to figure out why it was so popular amongst them and not the Japanese.
If you like quirky stuff like The Taste of Tea, just straight out crazy movies like Funky Forest or anything in between, Symbol should hit the spot for you. One of my all-time Japanese favorites anyways.
Seen the movie twice, I personally think it's good, my girlfriend agrees. On the other hand two of my friends I showed it to thought it was plain boring and pointless.
Just finished watching it, it's a surprisingly good movie. Especially if you're a fan of absurd/surrealist humor. The first hour is basically comedy, but it starts getting a bit more dramatic/deep near the end...won't spoil it.
You're the blackbird, the phoenix of the darkness, The phoenix of the darkness, The phoenix of the darkness...
